             Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects millions of us.  Upon first discovering that you have type 2 diabetes you are informed about a host of related health problems including the potential for heart disease and the possibility of a stroke.  Along with diabetes you may have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  Some develop skin problems, nerve damage, blood circulation problems, and other health problems. 

 

            You are also quickly informed that type 2 diabetes requires that you make significant changes in your life style.  You are told that you cannot eat foods high in carbohydrates and you cannot foods with plain processed sugar.  I you are left wondering if there is anything you can eat.

            Type 2 diabetes also means you have to exercise.  For a lucky few all that is required to manage their diabetes is changes in their diet and regular exercise. A few persons have been very successful in managing their diabetes by simply exercising every day for about an hour and changing their diet.  This can be going to the gym, or using a treadmill at home, or jogging. 

            Most persons with type 2 diabetes control their glucose level by taking medication and making some changes in their diet.   There are few persons with type 2 diabetes that believe no change in diet is required, and think they can control it by medication alone.  Such a philosophy is dangerous, because it, because it just means more and more medication to control your diabetes, and worsening health problems.

Typically the three things that are recommended to manage your type 2 diabetes are:  lose weight, exercise, medication, and a change in your diet.  Diabetes typically means you are not likely to enjoy the same foods you did, especially if you enjoyed foods high in carbohydrates such as pasta or pizza, but it does not mean you cannot enjoy food.  It is just a matter of changing your habits and trying out new foods you may enjoy.  There are many foods available for persons with diabetes.

Here you will find many foods you may not have considered.  These recipes are good for type 2 diabetes and also for anyone trying to lose weight.   The type of food that those of us with type 2 diabetes should be eating can actually makes slender and appear healthier now than we were pre-diabetes.  In general foods intended to lose weight are actually good food for those with type 2 diabetes.

For the most part cakes, desserts, and cookies are not good food choices for diabetics.  There are some recipes that use sugar substitutes which are okay for those of with type 2 diabetes.  There are not very many recipes with artificial sugar substitutes, so we encourage you to submit your recipes with sugar substitutes. 

So once we know we have type 2 diabetes we have to take medication, exercise, lose weight, and change our diet.
